Built and maintained by a registered tax agent. Works whether you lodge it yourself or hand it to someone else.

ExampleYou enteredSupported
Car (D1)$5,280$4,400 Cents per km is capped at 5,000 km. Keep a 12-week logbook to claim more next year.
Clothing (D3)$620$410 Plain black work pants aren't a uniform, even if your boss asks for them.
Tools (D5)$1,480$1,203 The drill press is over $300, so it's claimed over its effective life.
Total$7,380$6,013

Most people don't over-claim on purpose

They guess. A car claim that goes past the kilometre cap, a phone bill claimed twice because working from home already covers it, a tool claimed in full when it should be spread over years. The ATO compares your claims with people in similar jobs on similar incomes, so the guesses stand out.

DeductCheck applies the same rules a tax agent would. Where the rules say no, it tells you in plain words and shows you what would make the claim work next year.

See what you can claim first — however you lodge

If you lodge yourself in myGov, returns are due by 31 October 2026. If you use a registered agent, they can still lodge later — but you'll get more out of that appointment with a clear idea of your claims, instead of guessing together.

The free check takes two minutes. If your claims are small enough that you don't need us, we'll say so.

How it works

  1. Take the free checkA few questions about your job and what you spent. You'll see whether the full report is likely to be worth it before you pay.
  2. Answer the full questionnaireOnly the sections that apply to you. Save and come back any time on the same device.
  3. Get your reportWhat you entered, what your answers support, the difference, and the reason for each gap. Warnings for claims that are likely to be questioned.
  4. Attach your receiptsAdd photos or files next to each claim. They're bundled into an evidence pack on your own device. We never receive copies.
  5. Finish it your wayA step-by-step myGov guide if you lodge yourself — or send the report straight to your agent, or to Clearline, if you don’t.
What we keep: your answers, your results and a record of which files you attached (a digital fingerprint, not the file). What you keep: the evidence pack. The ATO can ask to see records for five years from when you lodge this return, so store it somewhere safe.

What it covers

Car, travel, clothing and laundry, self-education, phone and internet, working from home, tools and equipment (including depreciation), union and professional fees, donations and the cost of managing your tax. It doesn't prepare your whole return. Rental properties, shares, crypto and business income are out of scope.

Who we are

DeductCheck, a service of Clearline Tax & Accounting, registered tax agent 25624306.

What we collect

Your name, email, occupation, salary, your answers to the questionnaire, the results we calculate, any acknowledgements you make, and a digital fingerprint of each file you attach.

What we don't collect

Your tax file number, bank details or myGov login. Also, copies of your receipts or documents — files you attach stay on your device and go into an evidence pack that you download.

Why we collect it

To produce your report, to keep a record of the advice we gave you, and to meet our obligations as a registered tax agent.

Payments

Payments are handled by Stripe. We never see or store your card details.

How long we keep it

Five years from the date you lodge this tax return — or, if you lodge late, five years from your actual lodgement date — then it's deleted.

Your device

Your progress is saved in your browser so you can come back. Use "Clear my answers" to remove it, especially on a shared device.

Access and complaints

Email support@clearlinetax.com.au to see or correct your information, or to make a complaint. If you're not satisfied, you can contact the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner.

Terms of use

A service of Clearline Tax & Accounting · Registered tax agent, TPB No. 25624306 · ABN 48 911 480 162

1. About these terms

These Terms of Use govern your use of DeductCheck, a web application operated by Clearline Tax & Accounting (“Clearline”, “we”, “us”, “our”). You agree to these terms by checking the confirmation box when you start the questionnaire, or otherwise by using DeductCheck. If you do not agree, please don’t use the service.

These terms cover your use of the DeductCheck website and report tool. If Clearline separately agrees to prepare and lodge your tax return as your registered tax agent, that engagement is governed by a separate Client Engagement Letter, not by these terms — see section 10.

2. Who we are

Clearline Tax & Accounting is a sole-practitioner tax agent practice operated by Nathan Charles Ray, registered with the Tax Practitioners Board (TPB No. 25624306), ABN 48 911 480 162, trading as clearlinetax.com.au.

3. What DeductCheck is — and isn’t

DeductCheck is a self-help tool. You answer questions about your work-related expenses for an income year, and the tool applies general Australian tax rules to your answers to show you which deductions your answers support. A free version gives you a rough indication; the paid version (see section 5) gives you a full report, an evidence checklist and pack, and — if you self-lodge — guidance for entering figures in myGov.

DeductCheck is not personal tax advice. It applies general rules to the information you give it and does not consider your full financial position, your history, or anything you haven’t told it. It doesn’t cover income, offsets, rental properties, investments, business income, or your overall tax result. The report is only as accurate as the answers you give.

You remain responsible for the accuracy of your answers, for keeping the records that prove your claims, and for what you ultimately lodge with the ATO — whether you lodge it yourself or ask Clearline to lodge it for you.

4. Eligibility

  • You must be an individual completing your own Australian income tax return — DeductCheck doesn’t currently cover business, partnership, trust or company returns.
  • You must be at least 18 years old.
  • The information you give must be your own, accurate to the best of your knowledge, and not on behalf of someone else without their authority.

If you ask Clearline to lodge on your behalf and you’re not already an existing client, Clearline will complete its own identity-verification and engagement steps before acting for you — see section 10.

5. Fees and payment

  • The free check gives you an indicative result only. The full report, evidence pack and myGov guidance require payment of the fee shown on the site at the time you pay (currently $19 AUD, an early-adopter price; the standard price is $39 AUD and may apply in future years).
  • Payments are processed securely by Stripe. Clearline does not see or store your card details.
  • The fee is a one-off charge per income year’s report, payable before the full report is generated.
  • This fee is itself a cost of managing your tax affairs, and is tax deductible next year.

6. Cancellations and refunds

Nothing in these terms excludes, restricts or modifies the consumer guarantees you have under the Australian Consumer Law (ACL), and nothing here is intended to limit your rights under the ACL beyond what the law allows.

Our services come with guarantees that cannot be excluded under the Australian Consumer Law. For major failures with the service, you are entitled: to cancel your service contract with us; and to a refund for the unused portion, or to compensation for its reduced value. You are also entitled to choose a refund or replacement for major failures with goods. If a failure with the service or a good does not amount to a major failure, you are entitled to have problems with the service rectified in a reasonable time and, if this is not done, to cancel your contract and obtain a refund for the unused portion of the contract. You are also entitled to be compensated for any other reasonably foreseeable loss or damage from a failure in the goods or service.

How this applies in practice

  • If the full report fails to correctly apply the stated rules to the answers you actually gave — that is, a fault in DeductCheck itself, not in the answers you provided — Clearline will correct the report and reissue it at no extra charge, or refund the fee if that isn’t possible.
  • If you’re not satisfied for another reason, contact us (section 12) within 14 days of payment and we’ll look into it.
  • A report that correctly applies the rules to the answers you gave — including a result showing your rough total was already covered by figures like the no-receipts limit, so the full report added little — is not a failure of the service and isn’t ordinarily refundable on that basis alone, since the service did what it was designed to do.
  • Because DeductCheck doesn’t store your answers or files on our servers (see the Privacy Policy), a refund request may require you to describe what went wrong, since we may not be able to independently retrieve your session.

7. Your responsibilities

  • Give accurate and complete answers. The report can only be as good as the information you provide.
  • Keep records (receipts, invoices, logbooks, diaries) that support any deduction you claim, for five years from the date you lodge your tax return — or, if you lodge late, five years from your actual lodgement date.
  • If you choose to claim more than the amount your report supports, you do so against our advice and at your own responsibility. Any guidance we give (including the myGov walkthrough) only ever uses the supported figures.
  • Keep your device and email account secure. While you’re filling in the questionnaire, your answers are saved in your browser so you can come back later; they’re cleared automatically once you successfully send your report, and you can clear them yourself at any time before that.

8. Intellectual property

The DeductCheck website, its design, text, and underlying logic belong to Clearline Tax & Accounting. Your answers, and the report generated from them, are yours to use for your own tax affairs. You may not copy, resell, or repurpose DeductCheck itself without our written permission.

9. Limitation of liability

To the extent permitted by law, and subject always to the consumer guarantees described in section 6 (which cannot be excluded), Clearline’s liability to you in connection with DeductCheck is limited as follows:

  • We are not liable for errors, omissions, or outcomes that result from inaccurate, incomplete, or out-of-date information you provide.
  • We are not liable for any ATO review, audit, penalty, interest charge, or other consequence arising from a return you lodge yourself, including where you claimed more than your report supported.
  • We are not liable for indirect, consequential, or special loss, except where the law says we can’t exclude that liability.
  • Except for the consumer guarantees described in section 6, our total liability to you in connection with DeductCheck is capped at the amount you paid for the report.

10. If Clearline becomes your registered tax agent

If you tell DeductCheck you’d like Clearline to prepare and lodge your return, that request is a lead only — it doesn’t itself create a client relationship or an engagement to act. Before Clearline can act as your registered tax agent, you’ll need to complete a separate client engagement process (including identity verification and a signed Client Engagement Letter, consistent with Clearline’s TPB obligations). That engagement, not these Terms of Use, governs the tax agent services Clearline then provides.

11. Suspension and termination

You can stop using DeductCheck at any time, including by clearing your saved answers from your device. We may suspend or restrict access to DeductCheck if we reasonably believe it’s being misused, or if we need to for legal, security, or maintenance reasons.

12. Complaints and disputes

If something’s gone wrong, contact us at support@clearlinetax.com.au. If you’re not satisfied with our response, you can lodge a complaint with the Tax Practitioners Board (tpb.gov.au) for matters concerning Clearline’s conduct as a registered tax agent, with the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner for privacy matters, or with the Queensland Office of Fair Trading / ACCC for consumer law matters.

13. Privacy

Our Privacy Policy explains what information DeductCheck collects, why, and how long we keep it. It forms part of these terms — see the Privacy Policy page on the site.

14. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms from time to time, for example if pricing, the ATO rules, or the service itself changes. The version in force is the one published on the site at the time you use DeductCheck.

15. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of Queensland, Australia, and you submit to the non-exclusive jurisdiction of its courts.
